AROUND THE DISTRICT

"We're beyond over the moon to show the Governor the power of arts integration in our school," said an elated East Aiken School of the Arts Principal Lisa Fallaw following the school's visit from South Carolina's Governor Nikki Haley.

Governor Haley visited Aiken's Arts Magnet School this afternoon after hearing many good things. "Coming here today was a real treat," she said. "It was even more than I thought it would be."

East Aiken was transformed when arts were integrated into the basic curriculum, raising student test scores (double digit gains last year) and enrollment numbers (the number of students doubled the year following it's designation as an Arts in Basic Curriculum school).

The Governor believes that other schools can learn from East Aiken's model of arts integration.

"We want to be a model school for the state and look forward to sharing what we've learned works with other Title 1 schools," Fallaw said. "I strongly believe that children’s circumstances should not determine their opportunities and that arts education provides the high order thinking, creativity and imagination all students need."
